Welsh people have their say: Three–month public consultation on NHS in Wales
The Government has recently announced proposals for major changes to the structure of the NHS in Wales which are designed to reduce bureaucracy, remove the internal market and improve patient care. The Welsh Assembly Government has put them out for a three month public consultation and wants the Welsh people to have their say. The proposals include:
Measures to simplify the NHS have already taken effect in Wales, since seven NHS Trusts which merged into three recently became operational. The mergers should produce better joint working between hospitals, increase career opportunities for staff, offer patients a wider range of health professionals and, with smaller management teams, provide more money for frontline services. The proposed changes would build on this approach and extend it across Wales. An end to the internal market is part of a wider Welsh Assembly drive to encourage co–operation rather than competition in delivering public services and the proposals aim to meet that pledge. The Health Minister says these proposals are not driven by issues of cost and will be contained within current finances. For more details visit the Welsh Assembly website at: www.wales.gov.uk.
