Oldest ‘knowledge of life’ medical system: Swansea consultant to visit India to study Ayurveda
A Swansea consultant with an international reputation for research in orthodox medicine is joining a group of British GPs in a visit to India to learn about Ayurveda, which has origins going back 5,500 years, is believed to be the oldest surviving complete medical system in the world. Translated as ‘knowledge of life’, it is in daily use in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, and is a unique blend of science and philosophy that balances physical, mental, emotional and spiritual components. Anona Blackwell, a consultant in Genito–Urinary Medicine at Singleton Hospital, will be flying to India later this week to study Ayurveda as part of a [self–funded] trip organised by the Prince’s Foundation for Integrated Health. She intends using the training as a basis for preparing an introductory lecture on Ayurvedic medicine for healthcare staff. Her week–long visit to India will involve daily presentations in Ayurveda, yoga and meditation, and includes an individual health assessment by an Ayurvedic physician. Anona, who is internationally recognised for her Lancet–published medical research involving genital tract infections, also has a keen interest in holistic medicine. She is also currently collaborating with a group of scientists, psychologists and senior university staff in a multi–centered project, which aims to look at the neuroscience of the placebo effect. In 2006 she was invited to join the Royal College of Physicians Complementary and Alternative Medicine [CAM] Committee, now renamed Integrated Health Committee, joining doctors, patient representatives and CAM practitioners from across the UK.
