NHS Ayrshire and Arran and Jobcentre Plus:
New programme to boost health of people out of work

An innovative new scheme to help people get back to work after periods off sick has been launched by NHS Ayrshire & Arran and Jobcentre Plus.
The Condition Management Programme [CMP] has been set–up to help people improve their health and quality of life. The programme is open to anyone in Ayrshire and Arran on an health–related benefit, such as Incapacity Benefit.
Ruth Slessor, programme director, explained: “We know that the longer people are on Incapacity Benefit, the more likely they are to develop additional health problems, especially mental health problems. In other words – being off sick is bad for your health. We also know that nearly three quarters of people on Incapacity Benefit wish to work.”
People who decide to take part in the programme will have access to a team of health professionals, including occupational therapists, physiotherapists and nurses. Taking part is entirely voluntary and does not affect people’s Incapacity Benefit payment.
Ruth added: “Working isn’t just about money. It’s about the self–esteem and mental wellbeing that come from being active in your community. Our team can help people cope; from dealing with stress and anxiety to managing arthritis and chest complaints. Many people will have more than one health condition, especially if they have been out of work for a while.”
The first step for people who would like to find out more about the Condition Management Programme is to speak to an Incapacity Benefit Personal Advisor from Jobcentre Plus, who can refer for an assessment with a condition management practitioner.
