Initiatives set for Orkney, Shetland and the Westerns Isles

Lift low–mood and depression with Breathing Space

As Summer Time begins for many people who experience low–mood and depression the change in seasons can actually heighten their feelings of hopelessness and despair, reports Breathing Space Scotland.

Tony McLaren, national co–ordinator of Breathing Space Scotland explains: "Many people have the preconception that the brighter days will automatically lead to an increased feeling of happiness and wellbeing. Unfortunately for some people suffering from depression, the advent of spring and the rebirth of new life all around can actually intensify their sadness and they may feel frustrated that their mood hasn't brightened despite the improvement in weather and longer daylight hours.

"There is no clear cut explanation for why some people continue to feel unhappy. After months of hibernation the onset of bright spring days may illuminate their feelings of bleakness especially at a time when all around people are jovially anticipating summer which can be in stark contrast to the darkness that they may be experiencing and thus leaves them feeling even more isolated.

"That's where a service like Breathing Space can help. We have specialist ‘phone line advisors available every day of the year on: 0800 83 85 87. Breathing Space advisors can listen and offer advice, or suggest people who can help with more specific problems in the caller's local area or people can access advice and guidance via our website at: www.breathingspacescotland.co.uk."

Remote and rural awareness campaign for Scotland

This Spring Breathing Space embarks on a series of awareness–raising initiatives aimed at reaching some of the more isolated communities in remote and rural areas across Scotland.

The remote and rural campaign involves local radio and press advertising and a series of events in rural and island communities with a particular focus on Orkney, Shetland and the Westerns Isles.
