Modernisation for Aberdeen Royal Infirmary:

Plans for new emergency care centre at Foresterhill

NHS Grampian has approved initial business plans for a new £83 million emergency care centre at Foresterhill in Aberdeen which will integrate emergency services on the northeast's main hospital site.

The G-MED out of hours service, A&E, acute hospital assessment and admissions, part of NHS24, community services, mental health services and hyperbaric services will all be re–located to the centre. They will be supported by laboratories, radiology and pharmacy.

Project director Graeme Smith said that the project would transform service delivery. He said that as well as integrating emergency services, it represented a significant stage in the redevelopment of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, providing approximately 250 beds to the most modern standards.

All services will be delivered from new, purpose–built accommodation designed to maximise the integration of hospital and community services. The assessment area will have capacity for more than 40 patients, while a 15–bed medical high dependency unit will be co–located with the hyperbaric centre.

The core emergency care centre will provide a wide–range of medical high dependency care, resuscitation and major illness or injury services, with 40–beds in the assessment area. In addition, a minimum of 179 extra beds will be provided as part of the staged modernisation of the hospital.

The three–year project is expected to be finished by December 2011.
