Comment on Our NHS, Our Future report:

Listen to clinical staff and patients, says King’s Fund

The recent publication by Lord Darzi of his interim report on Our NHS, Our Future review has been broadly welcomed by the King’s Fund whose chief executive, Niall Dickson, stresses the importance of engaging with clinical staff and patients as against a too rigid adherence to central directives.

“Of particular importance,” said Mr Dickson, “is his commitment to the system reforms introduced so far, such as competition, choice, regulation, tariffs and new GP incentives. These are the tools that will have to be used to achieve real change.

“To create a health system that truly puts patients first, local services need to be responsive to local people and accountable for the outcomes they produce. The future of the NHS,” he added, “doesn’t lie in centrally devised grand plans, but in practical and effective changes around the country at a local level.”

The current problems associated with hospital–acquired infection were cited as a situation where the solutions are more likely to be found with hospital managers and clinicians. For further details of the Fund’s attitude to the Darzi report, visit their website at: www.kingsfund.org.uk.
