Government report on long–term food policy:

Better diet may prevent one–inten premature deaths

Improvements to diet could save 700,000 lives a year in Britain according to the Government’s Cabinet Office, whose Strategy Unit have looked at long–term UK food policy. The Unit’s interim paper concludes that urgent challenges go beyond obesity and says the critical issue is not how much people eat, but that they need to eat a better diet.

Current eating patterns of the average British adult substantially increase their risks of becoming obese and developing heart disease or cancer. With one–third of cardiovascular cases and one–quarter of cancer deaths already thought to be diet–related, an increase in the amount of fruit and vegetables people eat to at least five–a–day could have the biggest impact in tackling the problem.

In addition, eating more whole grains, oily fish, and consuming less salt, saturated fat and sugar, would all help to reduce the impact on long–term health says the report.

Along with public health, the paper looks more broadly at trends in the production and consumption of food. It covers the environment impact of the food chain, how those impacts might be tackled as well as issues of food safety.
