Mental Health Week MOT Scotland:
Physical health check–up for hospital nursing staff
During Mental Health Week physiotherapy staff at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital [REH] will help to raise awareness to the links between our mental health and our physical health.
The physiotherapy department are offering REH nursing staff a ‘physical health MOT’. This is an opportunity for the nursing staff to have their health and fitness assessed by physiotherapists who can then offer advice and practical help to improve or maintain fitness level.
Physical health and mental health are two sides of the same coin – one affects the other and vice versa. Improving our physical health can do a lot to improve our mental health and wellbeing.
The MOT will consist of a short series of fitness tests including those to measure body mass index and stamina levels. Guided practical gym sessions will be available as well as the chance to have an introduction to Basic Body Awareness Therapy. Nurses will also be offered advice on, and practical help with, nutrition and smoking cessation.
Whilst the primary aim of these physical health MOTs is to support nursing staff in improving their own physical and mental wellbeing, the hope is that this venture will also help nurses be more aware of how the physical wellbeing of their patients can impact on their mental health.
The Royal Edinburgh Hospital Physiotherapy Department currently runs a programme that includes regular gym sessions, yoga and outdoor activities. It is hoped that patient participation in these will increase as a result of the events of Mental Health Week.
