New contract alternative for patients:
Health board dental service to cover provision gaps
“Access to health service dentistry in Northern Ireland has become a growing problem in certain parts of the country,” said Health Minister Michael McGimpsey speaking recently in Ballymena.
His solution to the problem, which in some areas means that there are significant gaps between private and health service dentistry, has been to introduce a new concept where the dental service is employed directly by a health board, in this case Dalriada Urgent Care [DUC].
Known as the Salaried Dental Service, it is intended to provide general dental services which offer flexibility to patients, who may visit free for regular checkups or, after their first treatment, can then register with another dentist for their routine care.
The Minister said, “While I intend that the new contract will address the problems we currently face, it is vital that we build up alternative and additional provisions to that offered by independent practitioners. This will be needed to cover the existing gaps in health service dental provision, provide career options for the dental profession and offer best value.
