Project aimed at 'next generation of parents':

NHS Norfolk delivers food skills in the community

A new project called The Joy of Food aimed at improving the eating habits and nutrition levels of young people in Norfolk is being launched on Friday 14 March 2008.

Caroline Seaman, food and nutrition lead for NHS Norfolk and Joy of Food project manager explained that while a lot of educational work was taking place focused on children’s health in Norfolk, there was a risk of a gap opening up among the 14 to 30 year-old age group in relation to sound knowledge around cooking and nutrition.

“This gap represents the people who missed–out on good food education in school; were presented with some of the worst school food imaginable; and who have been subjected to more choice and promotion of fast and convenience food than any other generation before.

“The Joy of Food intends to go a long way to plugging that educational gap by training volunteer food enthusiasts to share their skills and love of food and cooking at a community level,” said Caroline.

At least 50 people – good enthusiasts, skilled amateurs or professionals, from across the county are wanted to join the project and share their cooking skills to help educate people in their own communities about The Joy of Food.

When trained–up the Joy of Food enthusiasts would run small groups of 'cook and eat' sessions around the county, starting from January 2009, based–in community centres, village halls and local pub kitchens.

The training sessions will be held during September, with a further training session in November.

Infolink: The Joy of Food is one of five lottery–funded projects in Norfolk, part of the East Region’s portfolio, representing over £1.3 million of funding over three years in Norfolk.
