North West framework to tackle obesity:

Support to help children and adults lead healthy lives

A blueprint for reducing obesity in the North West and enabling children and families to make healthier lifestyle choices will be launched at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, today [Wednesday 6 February 2008]. At the same time, indicators for child and young people’s health for each local authority in the North West will also be published in an online tool at: www.nwph.net/cayphi.

The North West Framework for Achieving Healthy Weight for Children and Families will bring together regional and local organisations with an interest in helping families lead healthier lifestyles from across the North West. The framework specifies both regional and local actions to tackle obesity in response to the national strategy calling for action recently launched by Government.

The North West faces significant challenges to improve the health and wellbeing of its children and young people, to ensure better quality of life and increased prosperity of the current and future population as a whole.

Many of these challenges, including child poverty, educational attainment and health inequalities, are complex and require co–ordinated and integrated approaches by organisations that can make a difference to the health and well being of children, families, carers and communities.

The North West is making progress on actions towards improving healthy weight for children and families both regionally and locally. A Food and Health Action Plan, launched early in 2007, describes work with the industry and public sectors to improve food production, procurement and marketing at a regional level.

There has also been extensive work with schools in the North West to encourage more children to eat a meal at school which is more nutritious. The Healthy Schools programme has increased healthy eating and physical activity both in and outside of school. Similar work is now being developed in Children’s Centres to support parents and young children to start healthy lifestyles at an early age.
