Modern and therapeutic environment for patients:
Rochford Hospital has 111 beds and cost £25 million. ‘Flagship’ mental health facility opens in South Essex
A state–of–the–art hospital has opened in Rochford, Essex, with over 100 beds available to care for people with mental health needs in a modern and therapeutic environment. Rochford Hospital, run by South Essex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust [SEPT], became operational in February with opening celebrations in January to show off the Trust's new 'flagship' facility to the public. Over 500 people came through the main reception during the open days, past tactile sculptures made from trees felled during construction, pictured below, and under the expanse of glass and steel that makes up the impressive ceiling, which gives the first view of the interior the building. The transformation of the old Roche Unit and chapel into a large, fully–equipped kitchen and staff dining area, The Herb Garden, enhanced by the carefully selected giclee prints which frame the large chapel windows to the adjoining kitchen garden, is seen as one of the major successes of the development. “I feel sure that there cannot be a more up–to–date or more stunning mental health hospital in the whole of the UK,” commented Joyce Culling, an open day visitor and former mental health service user. Patrick Geoghegan, chief executive, said, “I truly believe that the new Rochford Hospital will put pay to negative images of mental health services of days gone by, and will take the mantle of one of the most innovative hospitals of its kind in the country.” For more details visit the SEPT website: www.southessex-trust.nhs.uk.
