Cambridge NHS mental health assessment: New expert witness regional service for family courts
Today [Thursday 17 July] sees the launch of the Cambridge Child and Family Mental Health Court Assessment Service. The service offers psychiatric and psychological assessments to the courts of children and families involved in private and public court proceedings. This new regional service is based in Cambridge and is one of a few teams in the country undertaking court assessments in the NHS. The service has been developed in response to the Chief Medical Officer's recommendations in his report Bearing good witness: proposals for reforming the delivery of medical expert evidence in family law cases. The team is led by Dr Paul Millard, consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist. He has extensive experience of child psychiatry and of providing expert opinion to the courts in child care and contact disputes. The team also includes a consultant clinical psychologist and a consultant family therapist. The service is based at Douglas House, Trumpington Road, Cambridge, but the team will attend meetings and interviews wherever this is required.
