Message in a bottle initiative for seniors:

Essential data at hand for that unseen emergency

The ‘Message in a Bottle' scheme recently started in Northern Ireland plans to distribute 80,000 bottles to older people in which they will keep written details of important information, such as medical details, to assist the emergency services should they need to attend to that person.

As well as personal medical information, the bottle will contain details of the person’s next of kin and who should be contacted in an emergency. The special bottles are to be stored in the fridge and those arriving to provide assistance will be alerted that the older person has signed–up to the scheme by a special sticker on the front and fridge doors.

Bottles are distributed from local community safety partnerships, district policing partnerships and emergency services. The initiative has the backing of all emergency services and is designed to give people added reassurance that they will get the support they need if an emergency arises, according to Criminal Justice Minister, David Hanson, who launched the scheme.
