Natural body washes cleanse and refresh without drying skin. Basic hygiene routines help to maintain good health
The need for personal hygiene seems less important when experiencing bad health, especially if the mind is affected in any way. Under these circumstances, washing becomes a chore, the teeth are neglected, clothes uncared for and infrequently changed and dirty dishes pile up in the sink. The early symptoms of self–neglect quickly spiral downwards leading to a sense of isolation, particularly from those recently bereaved or living on their own, whereas just a little effort can bring significant results. We all feel better after a bath and a change of clothes, and this is where the personal support of a carer or health professional can make all the difference. Some germs can stay alive on the hands for up to three hours, one short hair follicle harbouring at least 50,000, a figure which doubles after a trip to the toilet. Yet many of us fail to wash our hands after a visit. This should entail at least 15 seconds of diligent hand rubbing, especially around the thumbs and between the fingers. Washing hair regularly, shaving, brushing teeth, keeping nails clean and cut, keeping clothes and the home clean, changing the bed linen all form part of the continual cycle of keeping our minds and bodies in good repair.
