The NHS staff that help patients with depression

Throughout Depression Awareness Week during April, NHS Careers highlighted the NHS staff that help patients with depression. The theme for this year’s campaign was employment.

As well highlighting the NHS staff helping sufferers every day with their condition, NHS Careers wanted to portray the staff helping sufferers get back into employment. Michael’s story is just one of the many examples that illustrates this.

Michael’s story

Michael was made redundant and was looking for work for a year before being diagnosed with depression. He was diagnosed after being persuaded by his friends to see his local GP. He also saw a clinical psychologist, who undertook a clinical assessment using techniques, such as interviews and psychometric tests. After the assessment, he was diagnosed as clinically depressed.

After seeing a psychotherapist and then a counsellor regularly for over six months, he was feeling a lot more confident and was thinking about going back to work. A few months later, he was off incapacity benefit and seeking employment. On his first visit to the Job Centre, the adviser told him about a Local Employment Partnership between the centre and the local hospital. This partnership helps job seekers get back into employment and off benefit. There were many vacancies but Michael really wanted to work directly with patients and there were vacancies for porters.

Two weeks later Michael went to see Jean, a human resources manager and then Malcolm, the voluntary services manager, at the hospital. Michael started by doing some work experience at the hospital but within a few months, he was working full–time as a porter. As well as helping him get better, NHS staff helped Michael get back on the career ladder. He has not been this happy for years.
